1-15-2024 – A Word to the Wise – I have never heard a church speaker, undergraduate Bible teacher, master’s degree, educator, or doctorate degree instructor teach or indicate that the Fear of the Lord was any more than reverential worship. Invariably I John 4:18 is quoted “There is no fear in love, but perfect cast out fear.” (RSV)
True these words are accurate but so are the following text regardless which version one is reading.
Philippians 2:12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, (ESV)
2 Corinthians 7:1 beloved, let cleanses ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit and make holiness perfect in the fear of God. (RSV)
Hebrews 12:28 Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; (NASB)
I Peter 1:17 And if you invoke as Father him who judges each one impartially according to his deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile.
Matthew 10:28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. (NIV)
I must give my mother credit for some of my strong conservative beliefs which contradict the teaching of many bible teachers.
The issue here is do these verses conflict with the I John 4 passage. No, they do not. The Lord does not want us scared of Him, that is and entirely different of fear. It is a matter of beholding the tremendous power, the eternal brightness of Him, the majesty. How we are going to act and think in His presence. Remembering we’re always in His presence, He knows our every thought, action, and our intent.
