Montagu, First Lord of the Admiralty, who was in charge of the naval war, was deeply infatuated with his lover, Martha Ray. James Hackman, another of her lovers, wanted to elope with her. When she refused, Hackmen shot her in the face. When Montagu was informed of her death at the beginning of the campaign at Yorktown, he went to bed and refused to be comforted. Lacking leadership, Washington defeated Montage’s army at Yorktown.
